Calasetta

Calasetta is the second town of the island of Sant'Antioco. The town is built around the imposing eighteenth-century tower, leading down, on one side, towards the beach of Sotto Torre, on the other towards the seafront and the small tourist port. The typical white and light blue color of its houses (from which the historical definition "gianca Cadesedda" comes), evoking the splendid Greek landscapes, makes it really pleasant to arrive in the town. Its inhabitants, of Ligurian and Piedmontese origin, share the the same origins from the Tunisian island of Tabarka with the neighboring island of San Pietro. Calasetta, in fact, was founded in 1770 by a small colony of Ligurians and Pegliesi who, around the middle of the 16th century, moved to the North African island to practice coral fishing. The Ligurian colony prospered until the beginning of the eighteenth century when the progressive impoverishment of the coral reefs, the increasingly frequent barbarian incursions, and the excessive rise in the population, provoked a serious crisis that caused the Tabarchini to emigrate. In 1738 a first and more numerous group left Tabarka and was welcomed on the island of St. Peter and founded the city of Carloforte. A second group, more than thirty years later, churches (this doesn’t make sense here) and went to settle in the north of the island of Sant'Antioco founding Calasetta. After two and a half centuries, the Calasettani still speak dialect and have customs that are typical of Liguria, the homeland of their ancestors. The Tower that dominates the inhabited center, bigger than the coeval coastal towers of Sardinia, was built parallel to the foundation of the city to protect it from the barbarian raids that frequently hit the island. Not far from the Tower, in the road that leads to the beaches, stands the important Museum of Modern Art which, every year, hosts exhibitions and works by artists from all over the world. From the port of Calasetta it is possible to reach the nearby island of San Pietro in half an hour by ferry, with frequent daily runs (even at night).
